Hot flashes are one of the symptoms of menopause. It is thought that a drop in the hormone estrogen causes them. Many women report that they feel heat mostly around their head, chest, neck, and shoulder area when experiencing them. Along with the unpleasant feeling of heat, some women also report nausea, rapid heartbeat, sweating and even a feeling of suffocation. While some misinformed persons, even doctors, have advised women that these reactions to a drop in estrogen are unavoidable, there are ways to naturally lessen the effects of menopause.
One method that was used more in the past, but has become less prevalent due to a possible link to breast cancer, is estrogen therapy. A synthetic estrogen replacement was prescribed to women to reduce the effects of menopause. Synthetics are not always the best answer however, and many people are now looking for more natural ways to treat these symptoms.
There are herbs that have been used by indigenous people of North America and the people of Asia for centuries. These gifts from nature successfully treat hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause. Some of these herbs are, rhubarb root, black cohosh root extract, damiana leaf extract, wild yam root, hops flower, chastetree berry, and don quai.
It is a popular misconception that these products, derived from plants, cause the body to produce more estrogen. That’s not the case at all. The phytoestrogen in these plants has the same effect on the body as estrogen without producing estrogen. They are a replacement, not a stimulant.
As people become more aware of the harmful effects of artificial ingredients and products in our environment, it seems only natural to use plants that have been used for centuries with no bad side effects. Another benefit of phytoestrogen is that is a natural detoxifying agent that binds with the receptors of harmful pollutants that make their way into our bodies from our environment and then mimic estrogen. One of the worst is xenoestrogens.
Xenoestrogens are “foreign” estrogens that are widely used in industrial compounds such as PCB, BPA and Phthalates. These foreign estrogens are being studied by scientists and have raised concerns because they have an impact on the health and possibly the endocrine system.
Using the natural herbal formulas to lessen or stop hot flashes altogether as well as cleansing the body of harmful chemicals is one reason why many women who are menopausal use herbal remedies.
